Personalized Speaking

People spend a huge chunk of their everyday conversation time talking about themselves and the people they know, so the most natural thing in the world is for us to invite our students to do the same. What our students bring to the learning environment is our richest resource. But if the lives they lead are to be at the centre of the courses we teach, are we guaranteed that students will talk freely and be interested in what their fellow classmates tell them? The answer is no. So what are some of the main challenges we face when doing personalised speaking activities and how can these challenges be met?

Culture – the fifth language skill

What do we mean by ‘culture’? Many teachers quote the Dutch psychologist Geert Hofstede’s maxim ‘Software of the Mind’, the subtitle of his 2005 book ‘Cultures and Organisations’. What culture covers is the commonly held traditions, values and ways of behaving of a particular community. It includes what we used to call ‘British and American life and institutions’, ‘daily life’ and also cultural artefacts, such as the arts or sports. This is all interesting and sometimes useful knowledge and it is often included in textbooks.

Teaching Outside the Class : in the Canteen

Did you ever teach your students in the canteen? Or did they learn something in the canteen? I did. And my children was so enjoy, because the can get out from the class (this is what they want to be and they are free from class) and they can eat some snacks and beverages – at this time – free. Yummy..

This is the story… The topic today is “You are What You Eat”. Children can learn so much from this topic.. an also this is never ending topic, so you can use this topic in every level of students. They are also happy because most of those activities is: EAT, making menu, cooking, and EAT again!!! In the following activities, this topic can be helpful to the school boards and the canteen it self to improve their food quality so that students do not need to worry about their food quality.

PROCEDURE

Tell your students that today the class will be held in the canteen. You will see how exited plus strange expression from your students when you said that. Don’t forget to ask your students to bring their pencil and paper. Explain that they must make an observation about some foods, with ingredients and how to cook it. Your students can ask to the chef or the canteen keeper. The output is a kind procedure texts or a recipe.

The key is that you must control your children well. If condition getting crowded and you feel enough, its time to the next step: going to the library.

Ask your students to look up about the ingredients and what is the benefits and disadvantage towards human body. They can look up either from books or from the internet as the reference. Their last project is to make a new healthy food menu in a new opening restaurant. The restaurant is dedicated for youngster at their age. The result in my class is “Meat ball sausage with cheese”,  “Rock n Roll Fried Rice”, “BB King Noodle” and much of others weird unique names of food.

Do you dare to teach yous students in canteen?

Strategy to Teach Writing

The main factor in Teaching Students Writing is that your students must involve personally towards the experience in teaching and learning process. Encourage students participation in practice time, while at the same time fix and develop writing abilities requires certain pragmatical approach. Teacher must know about the need of students’ abilities. furthermore, teacher must be the one who facilitate students interest as the topic of writing. After that, teacher continue to focus on the topic chosen to make the students’ participation. With this certain purpose, teacher may expect a good enthusiasm and effective teaching.

Choosing the topic depends of some factors. Age can be one of the factor to choose the topic. Children usually feel happy to write about short story, pictures, their family, etc. The higher level of students require more interesting topic to write. The other factor is the purpose of the writing it self. What is exactly the output of your writing? Is it a letter, story, description? What is the social purpose of the text? That questions must be answered before you ask your students to write. For the teacher, there are still one factor, that is the teacher purpose. What is the focus of the practice? Grammar mastery, punctuation, or vocabulary building?

After those factors above can be clearly stated (at least in teacher’s mind ) teacher can focus on students participation in the writing activities.

Teaching English for Pre-school (Children)

1. Vocabulary mastery

The vocabulary given in Pre-school students should be suitable with the topic of the lesson. for example, in the early weeks, you can ask them to learn about myself as the topic. So, the vocabulary given should be about that topic: myself.

2. Daily short expression

If you use first language as delivery language (bilingual school), you can use daily short expression, such as: Sit down please, Good morning students, How are you today, Read the book, etc.

3. Using Song and Pictures

Saya terbiasa mengajarkan vocab dengan lagu, dan biasanya lagu-lagu yang diberikan kepada siswa TK disesuaikan dengan tema yang sedang di ajarakan.
You can teach your students’ vocabulary by using song and pictures. It would be better if the song and pictures related to the topic. That would increase their motivation on learning.

4. Appreciation

Give your students appreciation in order to make them feel enjoy in your class. Even they are not doing so good in their performance to do the task. At least say thank you for every task you give.
